Karrum Karrum – a proud local history
The marshland behind the dunes was teeming with wildlife, with kangaroos and emus aplenty, hundreds of aquatic birds, fish and black eels. It was therefore a popular hunting ground for the Bunurong tribe who lived in mia mias on the banks of the Kananook Creek.
Today little of this natural habitat survives – except at the Wilton bushland and Aboriginal Reserve that borders your new home.
Start each day with a leisurely walk in the iconic bushland right outside your door. Imagine life as it was in Karrum Karrum while you admire the stunning native flora and fauna, relax and revive in one of the seated areas or treat yourself to your own alfresco feast on the landscaped lawns in memory of this area’s once rich source of sustenance.
History Hassett Farm
The former owner ‘Ted’ Hassett grew up in Carrum Downs in the 1920 and 30s where his grandparents owned a chicken farm at the corner of McCormick’s and Hall Roads. After a stint serving in the Army during the 2nd World War, Ted Hassett bought land in Frankston. Always wanting to return to Carrum Downs Ted Hassett later achieved his dream in 1968 by purchasing the farm.
The whole family sweated and slaved to clear and establish the property as a small dairy farm at first selling cream to the Dandenong Butter factory. Later on Ted Hassett (an accomplished cabinet maker) moved his cabinet making business to the property and continued farming beef cattle. Ted Hassett died in 2009 and the residential development all around the farm had made it unviable as a farm.
Assisted by Abiwood Developments, the Hassett family is now subdividing the property into house lots with extensive parkland features to ensure the passion of Ted’s wife Daphne for the indigenous flora and fauna is perpetuated. Many significant red gum trees are to be retained in both the Wilton Bushland Reserve and the additional reserves created with the development. Large red gums and parks will be a feature of this new estate along with the creation of a heritage information facility housing ancient artefacts (found on the property) of the original Boonwurrung landowners.
The Hassett family hope you enjoy living there as much as they did, it truly is a wonderful place to call home.
